Backslash Intervention 2025
Shuyi Cao is a Guangzhou-born, New York-based artist whose practice explores alchemical approaches to material and knowledge osmosis. Moving across sculpture, film, and installation, her work traces how matter becomes a site of memory, relation, and world-making amid environmental precarity and technological afterlives. Her process synthesizes embodied encounters with matters such as with clay, sand, glass, mineral and idiosyncratic shoreline debris, as well as digital translation with 3D scanning, modeling, and virtual environment simulation. Combining hand-crafted objects and technological artifacts, she creates speculative fossils as portals to meditate on diasporic ecology and prehistoric futurity.
