Backslash Logo and Brand Usage Guidelines
Backslash logo and brand usage guidelines for artists, students, partners and press.
For Artists
Your title
- Your official title is "Backslash Artist" (if you received a Backslash Award) or "Backslash Fellow" (if you received a Backslash Fellowship). You should use this title when sharing or writing about your role.
- Note that while your HR paperwork refers to you internally as a "Visiting Fellow", you should use the title above for all external purposes.
How to credit Backslash
- Please include "Supported by Backslash at Cornell Tech" when you document and share your work, which credits Backslash and helps bring visibility to the initiative.
- Credit may appear in the artwork's description or label, imbedded directly in the artwork (e.g., film credits), and in other supplemental writings for exhibitions, etc.
- If you are able to appropriately include a Backslash logo, see section below to download a high-res logo.
- Also refer the sections below for additional guidelines.
For Students
Your title
- As a student recipient of a Backslash Microgrant or other Backslash grant, your official title is "Backslash Microgrant Recipient" or "[Backslash grant name] Recipient".
- You may also refer to yourself casually as a Backslasher or \er.

For Press
Talking about Backslash
- See section below on "Backslash vs Backslash at Cornell Tech".
- Don't confuse the symbol "\" (backslash) with our mortal enemy "/" (forward slash) – it always happens at least once!
Talking about Backslash's programs
- Backslash awards grants to practicing artists and Cornell students under two umbrellas:
- Artists receive Fellowships and Artist Awards.
- Students receive Microgrants and Backslash Editor Awards (coming soon).
- Often, a Backslash Artist will engage the help of student collaborator(s). This engagement is part of the Fellowship or Artist Award, not its own student award.
- Some additional awards are given on a one-off basis and can be inquired about at backslash @ backslash.org
Quick facts
- Backslash was created in 2016.
- Since its inception, it has awarded over $500,000 in grants to fund new work by student and practicing artists.
- Backslash has engaged over 200 artists, students and faculty across 21 departments and programs in both Ithaca and Cornell Tech.
- Works funded by Backslash have exhibited at shows and galleries across the world, including the SculptureCenter in New York, Taipei Biennial in Taiwan, Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston, The Asia Culture Center in Gwangju, South Korea, Okayama Art Summit in Japan, Museum of the City of New York, Orlando Museum of Art in Florida, and Cornell University’s own Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art in Ithaca.
Talking about the \team
- The Backslash Founder, Greg Pass, is a Founding Fellow at Cornell Tech and was previously Cornell Tech's founding Chief Entrepreneurial Officer.
- The Backslash Community Manager, Vinny Campagna, manages the day-to-day operations of Backslash.
- Michael Byrne is the Creative Lead for Tech, Arts and Culture at Cornell Tech.
- Additionally, Backslash engages a rotating cast of faculty members from Cornell Tech's roster each year.
For Partners
- Partnership terms will include a description to use when communicating the partnership (e.g, "Supported by Backslash at Cornell Tech").
- When including Cornell Tech in phrases such as "in partnership with," "hosted by," "supported by," etc., Backslash should always be included in such phrases as "Backslash at Cornell Tech".
- At no point should a partnership with Backslash exclude "Backslash" from its crediting in lieu of only "Cornell Tech".
- Also see section below on "Backslash vs Backslash at Cornell Tech".
- All partnership materials that include Backslash are subject to review by Backslash and our marketing team at Cornell Tech to ensure that these parameters are met.
Backslash Logo
You can download high-res versions of the Backslash logo here.
The Backslash logo should only be used in the black and white variants provided. Please contact us if you wish to alter or fill their colors, forms, or contents.
"\" vs "Backslash"
- "Backslash" should be used when referring to the initiative itself and when formally referring to grant names and roles, such as Backslash Fellow, Backslash Microgrant, Backslash Community Manager, etc.
- "\" (also pronounced "backslash") can be used when casually referring to anything associated with the initiative that has been backslashed, i.e., its use subverted in some unconventional manner, such as \Studio, \team, \shirt, \door, etc.
- PS, don't confuse the symbol "\" (backslash) with its diametrically opposed "/" (forward slash)!
"Backslash" vs "Backslash at Cornell Tech"
- When crediting Backslash in artwork, please use the full title "Backslash at Cornell Tech".
- When writing about Backslash, please use the full title "Backslash at Cornell Tech" the first time the initiative appears in your article or publication. After that initial instance, you can simply refer to "Backslash".
- When describing Backslash, please refer to it as an "initiative" at Cornell Tech, not as program, organization, department, etc.
What happened to \Art?
Backslash recently rebranded, and should be officially referred to as "Backslash", not "\Art" or "Backslash Art". Our website also migrated to simply backslash.org.
