About Backslash at Cornell Tech
Backslash funds artists whose practices are nonlinear, unconventional, unexpected, adventurous, intense, surprising, questionable, and primed for engagement with new technologies – all symptoms of being backslash. Backslash lives at Cornell Tech, a digital-age, technology-forward graduate campus of Cornell University in New York City.

\
Backslash (\), otherwise known as whack, hack, slosh, bash, backslant, and reversed virgule – and not to be confused with forward slash (/) – is known as an escape character in computer programming, indicating that the characters after the \ should be interpreted outside the normal mode of input and output to do something special.

Backslash Artists
Backslash Artists at Cornell Tech are practicing artists recognized by Backslash as producing exceptionally backslash work. Backslash Artists receive grants to pursue a project and engage with Cornell Tech faculty & students, match with a research lab based on their project’s tech, and receive expert faculty advice on the latest research and capabilities. In addition to producing their artwork, Backslash Artists may exhibit their work on campus, guest speak in classes, or participate in campus events.
